FWA Compared to Other Connectivity Options

Sorting out the differences between internet connectivity technologies can be confusing.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a wired internet technology that delivers digital data over traditional telephone lines. Similar to Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), it was once a common option in certain rural areas because it could leverage the existing phone network. However, DSL is the slowest form of wired internet, with speeds heavily influenced by the distance from the main DSL distribution hub. Furthermore, as many countries phase out old copper-based infrastructure, DSL is steadily being retired.

Cable internet delivers data through coaxial cables—the same infrastructure used for cable TV—using a cable modem. It offers faster speeds than DSL but lags behind fiber. Although capable of high performance, cable connections are shared across multiple users, which can lead to congestion and slower speeds during peak usage times. Unlike cable, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) does not face these shared-bandwidth limitations.

Fiber provides the fastest and most reliable wired internet connection, but it comes with high infrastructure costs and labor-intensive installation. Because it relies on physical cabling, fiber is not practical for every location and remains limited in coverage. In contrast, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) can be rolled out more quickly and affordably while still delivering internet speeds comparable to fiber.

Similar to FWA, mobile broadband provides wireless internet through mobile networks, accessed with a modem, dongle, or similar device. While it offers the advantage of portability, it is generally slower and less reliable than FWA, making it less ideal for consistent use in a primary location such as a home or office.

Wi-Fi, like FWA, relies on radio signals to provide wireless connectivity through a router or access point. Unlike FWA, however, Wi-Fi is designed for short-range connections, mainly to link nearby devices to each other and to the internet. It functions as a local network and can be powered by various internet sources such as DSL, cable, fiber, or even FWA.

For larger enterprises seeking a comprehensive, IT-managed connectivity solution—beyond the straightforward, low-cost approach of FWA—a platform like Cradlepoint’s wireless wide-area network (WAN) may be more suitable. Wireless WAN links multiple local area networks (LANs) with headquarters, cloud servers, and other remote resources, enabling secure access and seamless sharing of applications, services, and data across the organization.
